So often we say to ourselves, I will start exercising tomorrow, or after the holidays, or when a certain event has taken place; and before you know it, days, weeks and months have passed and we are still saying tomorrow. Why put off today what you can do tomorrow? The truth about tomorrow is that it never comes, and unless we embrace the present, the opportunity will be gone. Why wait for a medical wake-up call to get healthy? Take hold of today before it disappears.
You want to get fit and in shape. You get a gym membership, a personal trainer, and a customised training program. But no matter how good the personal trainer is, and no matter how revolutionary the program, your body will not be transformed overnight. It takes discipline to get healthy and in shape. More significantly it takes commitment to one’s self, and a commitment of intent to achieve the goals. Much has been said, and researched, on the power of one’s word, and the power that your word to yourself has on changing your behaviour. So then, why do so many people make New Year’s resolutions or say daily affirmations; and yet still fail to reach their goals? Clearly something apart from “I can do it, and I can do the impossible” is needed to be successful. That something is a word that has as many meanings, as the number of people you ask for meaning. That word is INTEGRITY. Without getting into a debate about the meaning of the word, it basically implies that you will do what you said you would do by when you said you would do it. Most people say they have impeccable integrity, but let’s break this into two parts. Personal Integrity means keeping your word to yourself. Integrity to others means how you keep your word to other people. It’s not just about keeping your word to other people, but also to yourself. So when you say you are getting up at 5am for gym, and the alarm goes off – what do you do? Many people hit the NO INTEGRITY button and would rather snooze than be true to themselves. And yes, there is always a valid excuse. The truth is they are lying to themselves, establishing the belief that they cannot take themselves seriously. We should become aware of the commitments we make to both ourselves and others’, and take ourselves and our word seriously. A person will achieve their goals in direct proportion to the degree with which they handle their word with integrity. This has been proven time and again. We are all human and we have moments of weakness as we give in to the comforts of a warm bed over bench-pressing cold steel. What is key to our health and fitness success is that we the majority of the time are true to ourselves, our goals, and our word.
